Matthew Grant Cole was born in Toowoomba on 15th June 1972.
He attended East State Primary School and Toowoomba State High School before going on to tertiary study at the University of Queensland.
Matt began his cycling career while at high school and, under the very capable guidance of John Osborne, he represented Queensland in both track and road teams for a number of years and won medals at both State and National levels. Matt relinquished competitive riding in order to concentrate on his studies and then lived for two years in London. Upon his return to Australia Matt spent as much time as possible on his bike. Tragically, Matt lost his life in an accident whilst riding in Melbourne on 22nd January 2005.
Nathan O'Neill has credited Matthew with being an inspiration during his early years of cycling when the two trained together as members of the Toowoomba Cycling Club.
